How Can You Know Jesus?

Step 1: Understand God’s purpose for your life.

God loves you and wants you to experience peace and life—abundantly and eternally.

As the Bible says…

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

Step 2: Understand why you are separated from God.

God created you in His own image to have an abundant life. Although He could have done so, God did not make you to automatically love and obey Him. He wanted you to choose to love Him.

So He gave you a free will and a freedom to choose Him and His Kingdom or not. The first man chose to go his own way and disobey God, committing the first sin. Sin results in separation from God.

As the Bible says…

“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Step 3: Understand why your attempts to reach God fail.

People have tried in many ways to bridge this gap between themselves and God. Yet nothing you can do will bridge the gap between you and God caused by your sin.

As the Bible says…

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12).

“But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2).

Step 4: Understand that Jesus Christ is the only bridge to God.

Jesus Christ died on the cross, bearing all your sins, burdens, and sicknesses. Three days later, He rose from the grave. He paid the penalty for our sin and bridged the gap between a holy God and sinful man.

As the Bible says…

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5).

“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit” (1 Peter 3:18).

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

God has provided the only way. Each person must make a choice.

Step 5: Receive Christ.

You must trust and accept Jesus Christ as the Lord (Ruler) and Savior of your life. You must receive Him by His personal invitation.

As the Bible says…

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20).

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12).

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10).

How to receive Christ:

  • Admit that you need Him (confess that you are a sinner).
  • Be willing to turn from your sins (repent).
  • Believe that Jesus Christ died for you on the cross and rose from the grave.
  • Through prayer, invite Jesus Christ to come in and control your life through the Holy Spirit (receive Him as your Lord and Savior).

Step 6: Say the prayer of salvation.

If you are ready to receive Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are ready to say the following prayer of salvation:
“Heavenly Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus. I know that I am a sinner and need Your forgiveness. I confess with my mouth and believe in my heart that Jesus died for my sins and that God raised Him from the dead with the power to change my every situation.

“I ask you now to forgive me of my sins. I am turning from my sins and my ways of doing things. I now invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as the one Lord and Savior of my life.

“I am now reborn. I am a Christian, a child of the only living, almighty God. I am saved! In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.”

If you prayed this prayer, the Bible says…

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

If you sincerely asked Jesus Christ to come into your life, where is He right now? What has He given you?

“For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

After you receive Christ, you are born into God’s family through the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit who indwells every believer. This is called regeneration, or the “new birth.” This is just the beginning of a wonderful new life and relationship with God through Jesus Christ!

What should you do next?

To deepen your relationship with Jesus, you should:

  1. Get into a Bible-based, local church where Christ is preached.
  2. Read your Bible every day.
  3. Talk to God in prayer every day.
  4. Tell others about Christ.
  5. Worship, fellowship, and serve with other Christians.
  6. As Christ’s representative in a needy world, demonstrate your new life by your love and concern for others.
  7. Praise ye the Lord! If you have just made a commitment to Christ, please contact us. We would like to pray for you personally and help you grow in your faith.
